Environmental Stewardship

We are proud to operate in the ecologically diverse region of coastal British Columbia, and grateful to those before us who have protected and maintained the environment. At Hullo, there is a deep sense of responsibility to ensure that our services have as minimal an impact as possible, and that the environment is able to thrive for generations to come.

Marine life protection

Our vessel operators complete specialized training to understand behavioural patterns of marine life, and take proactive measures to minimize disturbance. Our crew adhere to all local regulations, guidance, and recommendations, including the Marine Education and Research Society (MERS) and Enhancing Cetacean Habitat and Observation (ECHO) programs to mitigate our impact on marine life. We reduce speed, alter course, or increase distance whenever marine mammals are spotted or when their behaviour or movement is uncertain.
hullo-shoreline-mitigation

Shoreline mitigation

To minimize the impact of waves on coastal areas, our vessels reduce speed when entering Nanaimo and Vancouver harbours. Our catamaran design creates less water disturbance, and our captains work with natural wave patterns and currents to optimize speed and stability while reducing wake.
hullo-adv-tech

Advanced technologies

To improve our ability to detect and respond to marine life, we utilize advanced equipment, including night vision goggles, thermal cameras, and dedicated lookouts trained to identify marine mammals and other hazards. We also test AI-driven systems linked to Forward-Looking Infrared (FLIR) thermal cameras to enhance our ability to track and monitor traffic, objects and marine mammals in real-time, further strengthening our commitment to safe navigation across the Georgia Strait.
hullo-car-less-travel

Car-less travel

By leaving the car behind and using a passenger ferry that docks directly in downtown Vancouver, Hullo guests prevent more than 800kg of CO2 emissions from entering the atmosphere — the amount typically generated by driving from a ferry terminal to the city centre. That’s over 800 kg of CO₂, every single sailing!
